Are you living in Singapore and want to take a weekend holiday somewhere? I recommend going to this cute town of Melaka if you want to experience culture, cheap drinks, and amazing food! Melaka (Malacca) was once owned by the Portuguese, Dutch, and the British. This place is filled with culture and a one of a kind place!
How to get there:
We booked a 4 hour bus ride from Singapore to Malaysia through this site. It was roughly $20 SGD per person when we went and it's really affordable! All you need is your passport to cross the border and you are good to go!
The food is AMAZING! Before you head off to the Jonker Walk night market, spend the day checking out the restaurants around Melaka.
The Daily Fix for Breakfast
Get an asian meets western breakfast with a Malaysian twist. We loved the food here however we had the worst table ever :( It was very tiny and we had to eat from our laps. We would come again just do not sit in the corner like we did. Try the pandan pancakes to try this delicious fusion of our favorite green dessert. Check it out here.
The Coffee JAR for Your Afternoon Coffee Fix
The modern and rustic ambience has a cool vibe to sit down and relax with a cup of coffee. A perfect pick me up for the day before we headed off to explore some more. Check it out here.
Straits Affair for a Malaysian Brunch
Literally the best food that I had in Melaka! Do make sure to try the Laksa and the Tea set to try a bunch of Malaysian desserts. I literally fell in love with everything that I ate. Also the restaurant is dairy free since Malaysians are lactose intolerant. I requested my Laksa to have no seafood and they were happy to accommodate me. Check it out here.
Backlane Coffee for Desserts & Caffeine
Mmmm the desserts here were delicious, let me tell you. Even if you just need a cool place to escape from the heat, do stop by! The decor is so cute and has a trendy hipster vibe to it. Check it out here.
Dutch Harbour Cafe for Dinner
Enjoy a relaxing dinner by the river at the Dutch Harbour Cafe. The food here was average but we mostly just came for the view. All of the neighboring restaurants seem to have similar menus so we picked the one that seemed the cutest to us. Check it out here.
Sights to See:
This town is filled with old ruins and unique architecture. It's a very colorful place and a photographer's paradise!
Dutch Square (Red Square)
Visit the red buildings and the Christ Church of Melaka. This church was built in 1753 and you can even go inside!
The Ruins of St. Paul's Church
Climb to the top of the hill for the best view of the town. Go inside too and read up about the interesting history!
Visit The Independence Memorial
An eye catching building that is a must see. Here you can learn about Melaka's independence to Malaysia.
Drink From A Watermelon
You can find stands around here that sells you blended up watermelon that you can drink straight from a watermelon! Sooo yummy and refreshing for a hot day.
Jonker Street Art
A very colorful spot and although it is not really on Jonker Street, it is right next to it.
The River Walk
Lots of colors, flowers, cute restaurants, and vintage cars line the river. A perfect place for a stroll with your loved one.
St. Francis Xavier Church
I thought my eyes were playing tricks with me when it was slanted but it really is like that! It's a beautiful church that holds weekly masses.
Try The Street Seasoned Potato Spirals
These are spiraled potatoes deep fried with yummy seasonings! We got the Curry and BBQ! SOO GOOD!
Go on a River Tour
A fast a fun way to experience what the river life has to offer.
Jonker Street Night Market
Packed with many many people you will discover a lot of amazing food and little knick knacks that you can buy. We went crazy with the food here and loved everything that we tried.
Go on a RickShaw
Screw uber, and take one of these bad boys. Traffic here is quite slow but these bikes are cheap and can go basically anywhere!
Melaka was awesome and I totally recommend that everyone goes! It's one of those underrated hidden treasure spots that is different from what everyone else does. We loved it here and we would go back just for the food because it was that good!
