3 Things You Can Do Right Now To Be Healthy

Hey guys! So in today's post I want to share my fitness routine and the steps I take to stay healthy! I am a curvy girl and I have a very low metabolism - just looking at a cookie makes me gain 5 pounds! Over the last few months I've slowly been losing weight by making a couple of changes.
Just remember that it takes time to lose weight, don't get discouraged, stay consistent. 

I had to learn the hard way that extreme diets and workout plans simply don't work for me, after all that effort I would just gain it all back twice as fast. If you stay consistent and be patient, not expecting to see results right away give it a little time and then you WILL see progress. I have seen some gradual improvements and I still have a long journey to get to my goal weight. The important thing is that I am not torturing myself with extreme diets that make me feel unhappy and insane workout challenges that leave me making me feel sick. I have summarized what worked for me into 3 actionable items that you can do right now to start your journey towards your goal.

1. Actually go to the gym.

Make a schedule and stick to it. I try to go three times a week with my boyfriend in the mornings, also trying to fit in cardio whenever possible outside the gym as well. Don't know how to workout? That was me like a few months ago. I was thinking things like "What is a squat?", "How many do I do?", "Am I doing it right?". All these things take experience and often it helps to have a friend (or simply ask someone at the gym) to ask if you're doing things correctly.

On my gym days I start off with 30 minutes of cardio (15 min elliptical and 15 min bike). I know that sounds like a lot and at first I was only able to do 10 min of elliptical without feeling like passing out. Just like with everything, practice and patience will get you to do more than you ever thought you could. After some cardio I make sure to stretch. - this is essential, also for me it's a little mental break to prepare myself for what comes next, muscle and weight training. 

For working on my core I use the Ab Wheel Roll and do 3 sets of 10 reps. This little simple device KILLS you but it gives you an amazing workout. If you can only do 5 that's okay - it took me several sessions before I was able to complete a set! If you stay consistent one day you will be able to do more than you ever thought possible. I like to stagger my activities so that I can work on a different muscle group in between multiple sets of the same activity. So after my first set of the ab wheel roll, I do 10 squats (holding at the low point for a second), I  generally do 3 sets of 10. Following that I take 7kg (15.4lb) dumbbells in each hand and do 3 sets of 10 bicep curls. 

I didn't see any results at first but probably after 5 or 6 gym sessions my boyfriend told me that I've toned a little. I was SO happy to hear that. That my hard work is starting to pay off. I still have a LONG way to go but I won't give up. Even on those days that I don't feel like going I'll at least go for a walk and do better next time. If you can show up to the gym and do even one thing it's much better than never having gone in the first place

2. Stop going out to eat!!

I know I know, so much yummier, convenient, etc. Now that I live in Asia, I can go out to eat more often and not feel too bad about it. Asian cuisines are really healthy compared to American food so you simply have to move to Asia. Just kidding! but if you still want to go out to eat with your friends or your boyfriend like me then here are the things you need to cut out: anything fried, soda/cocktails, heavy sauces, cheese, dessert, appetizers, and large portion sizes. 

American portion sizes are insane. NO ONE should be eating that much. When I used to live in the states, I would often try to convince my friends to split the meal with me. I would say, "Ugh the meals are way too big don't you think? Let's save some money and calories and share it. If we are still hungry afterward then maybe we can split an appetizer." It usually works for me and then I save money too.

But if you can avoid going out to eat because you have a craving then please do. But I get it, it's hard when those cravings come. I mean I have NO SELF CONTROL when I start to crave something. So I usually end up eating whatever I'm craving but then I feel like crap after. I try to remind myself how hard I've worked and try to "procrastinate" on my craving to another time when I'll appreciate it more. It's important to let "treats" be treats and not become an every day or every other day type food. Not eating out on Tuesday night because I'm too lazy to cook and I'm craving french fries. Just don't do it. I can still have my cravings guys! Just not whenever I want it! I crave feeling healthy more anyways. A good way to counteract this is to ensure you have a well stocked pantry and that you have a range of simple/easy to cook meals ready to go. I find if I plan my meals ahead of time it definitely helps.

3. Buy cute workout clothes.

This totally works! I love looking cute at the gym. It makes me want to work out harder because I feel more confident in myself. My favorite places to get workout clothes are Lululemon, Target, Albion Fit, Cotton On Body, Forever 21, and Victoria's Secret PINK. I just reached one of my fitness goals so I rewarded myself with a CUTE outfit from Lululemon. Yes, I know Lululemon is expensive but do you know how many cocktails, desserts, and appetizers it takes to buy this?! I'd gladly give up a few cocktails for a super cute outfit.

Looking at these photos, I can't help but start to criticize myself on my appearance and how much more I have to lose. Catch yourself anytime you try to put yourself down. Punishing yourself does not motivate you to lose weight. Instead say, "Hey, I'm looking stronger and more confident than I was a few months ago. I can't wait to see how I'll look in a few more months. Better keep up the good work because I'm getting there!"
