How I Met My Boyfriend Solo Traveling The World

by - 7:16 AM

Today’s post is a little bit different than usual… I am going to discuss a topic that is very near and dear to me. And that is my relationship with my boyfriend, James. A few weeks ago we celebrated our One Year Anniversary in the Philippines and it was so perfect. We stayed in a beautiful villa and even took some awesome drone videos! If you’d like to see a Guide on What to Do in Boracay Philippines then click here! Even though our 1 year anniversary was on the 12th of May, I still wanted to make this special post and video of our adventures.

I met James while solo traveling through Southeast Asia. I am originally from the US and James is from New Zealand but he worked and lived in Singapore for about a year and a half before I met him. During my stay in Singapore of January 2016, I was feeling a bit lonely by the last day because the hostel I stayed at didn't have much of a social life so I decided to do what every 20 year old did at the time and that was downloading Tinder. I’ve always been a hopeless romantic and had hope that good guys existed out there. Even on Tinder. James and I #SwipedRight and we made plans to go to 1-Altitude Sky Bar which is the highest Sky Bar in the whole world! We spend the entire night talking and getting to know each other. We even sat on the steps of the Merlion statue until 3am! After I returned to the states, we kept in contact for a few months knowing there was something more between us. One day we made the spontaneous decision to travel together around Southeast Asia. We called it our “Dating Moon” and went on some pretty exotic dates. Kayaked through Ha Long Bay in Vietnam, went to Thailand, shared our first kiss at a park in Ho Chi Minh City, and spent 3 weeks going through an incredible adventure together. Hiking a volcano in Bali definitely beats a dinner and a movie. It was during that time traveling together that we fell in love and vowed our commitment to each other.

We did long distance for a while until our hearts couldn’t take it anymore. I have always wanted to live in a new country so I decided to move to Singapore so I could be with the love of my life. I never thought that I would do this for anyone in a million years, but James is my other half and I can’t imagine life without him now. Against all the odds, we are currently thriving in our relationship.

Our relationship isn’t always sunshine and rainbows though. We fight and argue just like every other couple. We get on each other’s nerves, words get misunderstood, and sometimes we are upset at each other for no reason! But we never go to bed angry or upset at each other because life is too short to not be happy! He is there for me when I’m in the ER and he’s there for me when I’m crying over nothing because I am on my period.

Despite the bad times, I would say that we have been on some pretty amazing adventures together! Memories that I couldn’t even dream of before. Hiking at Zion National Park in Utah, Camping under the stars at the Grand Canyon, partied in Vegas, tandem biked along the beach in California, kissed at the Golden Gate bridge in SF, went wine tasting in Napa Valley, took a ferry to Bintan Island in Indonesia, went to Sydney and Melbourne in Australia, spent Christmas and New Years in New Zealand, spent a weekend with our friends in Hong Kong, visited Malacca in Malaysia, and celebrated our anniversary on the gorgeous island of Boracay in the Philippines. I can’t wait for many more adventures with this guy!

Not only is he the best travel buddy but he is an old fashioned man which I adore. Even a year later, he always holds the door open for me, lets me take the last bite of his food, lets me stand under the umbrella, carries my bags, and wakes me up every morning by saying “Good Morning Beautiful!” He is a genuine and sweet man and I feel so lucky to have him.
