The Ultimate Weekend Guide in Langkawi

by - 4:58 AM

Langkawi, Malaysia is a little island situated in the Andaman Sea of Southeast Asia. Langkawi is full of lush green vegetation, monkey filled trees, clear turquoise ocean waters, and white powdery beaches. This island is nothing short of paradise and adventure.

Geographically Langkawi is located almost as close to Thailand as it is to Malaysia. So it has very similar landscapes and beaches to what you would have seen and expect from southern Thailand, with the added benefit of far fewer tourists and manicured tourism industry. This allows you to really relax - instead of worrying about the crowds and scams you can focus on enjoying the breathtaking nature, and experience the local life around you.

Most tourists don't spend more than a few days here since it's usually one destination of many when traveling around Southeast Asia. Since I live as an expat in Singapore, I only came here for a weekend (Friday morning to Saturday Night) and it was plenty of time to experience what this exquisite destination is all about.

How To Get There:

The Ultimate Weekend Guide in Langkawi
From Singapore the flights are only about an hour long. We flew with SilkAir but you can find ridiculously cheap flights through AirAsia if you're on a budget. If you happen to be in Penang then there are 30 minute domestic flights and even ferry options!

What To Do:

Go on a Jet Ski Island Hopping Adventure

They say money doesn't buy you happiness - but it does buy you a once in a lifetime amazing experience. What is the most fun and adventurous way to go island hopping? On a jet ski of course! We booked a "Discover Magical Island by Jet ski" tour through this amazing company we found called Naam. This was our most favorite part from our trip and we definitely recommend that everyone does this at least once in their lifetime. There's nothing like speeding through the clear blue ocean with the most breathtaking limestone cliff islands of the beautiful land of Langkawi. Naam not only values customer satisfaction but they take great pride in their safety standards. I have been on way too many excursions in Southeast Asia where they don't even offer you a lifejacket. Naam on the other hand always makes sure that everyone is safe and equipped with a life jacket.

We filmed our entire adventure with a GoPro and even a DJI Mavic Pro Drone to show you guys what to expect on the tour. To book your "Discover Magical Island by Jetski" tour then click on this website: https://www.naam.bz/

Indulge in the beautiful white sand Cenang Beach

The Ultimate Weekend Guide in Langkawi
The coast line is a long strip of picturesque white sand. The sand is so soft and inviting that no wonder it is Langkawi's most popular beach. Not only is this a famous spot to come during the day to soak up some sun but you must come for a front row seat to one of the island's best sunsets. Here you can book water sports, thrilling experiences, and there are even restaurants on the beach.

We watched the sunset on the beach on one of the evenings we were here and underestimated how spectacular it would be. The skies were being painted a pretty pale pink color as the sun was going down, children were playing, and a friendly dog even approached so we let her join us as we sat there in pure bliss enjoying the view. Trust me, you don't want to miss out on this one!

Take The World's Steepest SkyCab to The Langkawi Sky Bridge

For only 40 ringgit per person, you can ride up the world's steepest cable car to the top of this mountain with an amazing walkable sky bridge with breath taking views below from over 2,000 feet high. I wouldn't advise the people that have a fear of heights to go up here though since no matter where you look there are extreme drop offs. For someone who's not afraid of heights, even I felt a bit queazy.

The journey up here comes in a few steps. After riding 2 sets of cable cars, there will be a steep staircase that will take 10 minutes to get to the bottom of and you will eventually arrive down to the Sky Bridge. Going back up is physically challenging however so make sure to bring good walking shoes and some water!

Visit the Laman Padi Rice Museum

When we arrived here, we didn't expect this place to be so deserted. We were the only ones there yet the museum was open. Despite the spookiness we showed in this video, we had fun exploring the premises on our own.

This museum is a gallery of with a collection of artifacts, photos, exhibits, collections, charts, and tools displayed on the history of rice cultivation in Langkawi. After coming here, I never knew there were so many different types of rice and so many ways to use them!

Go to the top of Gunung Raya Mountain

The Ultimate Weekend Guide in Langkawi
Unfortunately we came at a bad time. The moment we arrived at the top of the mountain, the weather became bad. It was really cloudy and we couldn't see anything. It was rumored that the watchtower was supposed to have an even better view and advertised with complimentary Chinese tea. I wouldn't recommend wasting your money going up the watchtower because it was a scam and there was nothing special about it. If the weather was nice though, then this would probably be the best view in all of Langkawi.

Despite our experience, other people told us that they really enjoy going up here so I would still recommend that you take the trip up here. And if you rented a car like we did then it's even better because then you get to drive up it! Just be careful for the stray animals and not get hit by them!

Eat exotic fruit and tour around MARDI Agro Technology Park

If you are a fan of agriculture and exotic fruits then this attraction is for you! Take the guided fruit farm tour through the premises when the guide will drop you off at several different spots with one being a fruit tasting buffet! I got to try several deliciously unique fruits that were grown fresh off of the farm that we were in.

Where to eat:

Beach Restaurant at Berjaya Langkawi Beach & Spa Resort

I had the vegetarian wrap and my boyfriend had a burger. The view from the restaurant was remarkable but we didn't really enjoy the taste of the food too much. It was also really expensive compared to the rest of the restaurants in Langkawi. You mostly pay for the view which we really enjoyed. The location was really close to the Cable Car to the Langkawi Sky Bridge which was really convenient for us since we planned to go there after.

fatCupid

This restaurant was also a little pricey for Malaysian standards but it has a lot of great options for curries and rendang. We came here for dinner and I had the vegetarian rendang but my boyfriend had the beef rendang. I absolutely loved my meal, the restaurant, ambience, atmosphere, and everything in between. We recommend this restaurant to everyone if you're looking for a nice meal.

Sun Cafe

This place was my favorite out of all of the restaurants we went to because of the taste and quality of the food. We ordered a lot since we didn't have lunch until 4pm that day. Everything from the pesto potato wedges, to the vegetarian curry, beef rendang again (for my boyfriend), and even the coffee was amazing! I would highly recommend especially if you are already in the Cenang Beach area.

Pia's The Padi

The Ultimate Weekend Guide in Langkawi
Not only was the food amazing once again, the view was even more amazing. Eating malaysian food with a breathtaking sight of the rice paddies is an experience you won't forget. Once again my boyfriend ordered the beef rendang again but out of all of the ones he has tried, he liked Sun Cafe's the best. It was a very difficult decision for him to make because all of the one's he had were all delicious in their own ways.

We don't always like to splurge on fancy places when we travel sometimes because we we want to save our money for when it's really worth it. To be honest we weren't expecting much out of this place because it was so cheap off of Booking.com for only $50 SGD a night. We were pleasantly surprised with how fabulous and beautiful this quiet and not well known villa was. It is run by a very friendly South African couple and their hospitality was simply impeccable. Everything from the quality of bedding, to the infinity pool overlooking the sea and jungle, and even the complimentary home cooked breakfast made us feel like we were at a 5 star resort! We were blown away with the quality of our stay and fell inn love with our cute little villa. James and I have stayed in a lot of places around the world but I must say, this has to be one of our favorite stays so far. Click here to book your stay at this amazing place!

Do's:

The Ultimate Weekend Guide in Langkawi
-DO Rent a car (ours was 50RM per day)
-DO shop at the Duty Free Malls on this tax free island
-DO wear sunscreen because the sun in Langkawi can be quite brutal

Dont's:

The Ultimate Weekend Guide in Langkawi
-DO NOT be disrespectful of the local's culture and religious values
-DO NOT feed the monkeys because they will follow you and even attack you!

In Conclusion:

The Ultimate Weekend Guide in Langkawi
Head to Langkawi for at least a weekend before it gets too touristy! Enjoy the breathtaking nature, amazing curries, tax free & duty free shopping, the white sandy beaches, and amazing adventures awaiting your visit. No wonder my boyfriend has been here 4 times now! It makes me want to return again sometimes in the future.
