How I Got Viral From a Photo Taken On My iPhone As A Professional Travel Photographer

by - 2:22 AM

I get paid to travel and promote various places I see, eat, and stay at around the world. It took me years of hard work to get here by investing thousands of dollars into fancy camera equipment, spending countless hours every day working on my brand, and sacrificing everything I had.
But little did I know that a poor quality image from my iPhone would go viral and be viewed by millions.

Travel blogging IS HARD. It is SO hard to get noticed. Look at the thousands if not millions of people who want to be a successful social media influencer wanting to getting paid to travel the world. For the longest time, I would never seem to get any sort of collaboration or any lucky break. Even if you've been around as long as I have, it can still feel like you are spinning in circles scratching your head how your content will get noticed.

I strategically plan all of my Instagram posts with the right angle, using my fanciest and most expensive camera equipment, hours of editing photos, research on the most perfect captions, the best hashtags I could find that will get me the most social reach and exposure, and even the right time that I post. After being consistent with this strategy for over 2 years, I became frustrated with my numbers because they seemed to have plateaued.

One time I decided to break my little schedule and post a random photo of red lanterns lining a random alleyway I found during my trip to Hong Kong on my public Instagram story. I don't know why I decided to spontaneously post this photo but I did with no intentions of it being shared by so many accounts all over the web. Just when I was on the brink of giving up, I got the notification that changed everything for me.

THAT IS MY PHOTO!!!! Wait really? My photo got shared by REFINERY29?! How did they even find my photo? I guess I'll never know...  ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

The moral of the story is that you don't need a nice expensive camera to get your photos to be noticed by the world. Fancy cameras can be bought but talent cannot.
